Confidence/Self Esteem and Brahmacharya

Dhananjay • 3/10/2012
Question

Dear Brother,

I would like to know if following brahmacharya can help one develop confidence and improve self esteem?

For instance, I have been suffering from low self esteems despite being a graduate and having a good career. The only mistake I did was masturbation for 15 years. And I have seen it engulf my self esteem and confidence. Also, naturally i have a low self esteem due to oppressed upbringing and pent up emotions since young.

I am 29 and have lost my youth to masturbation, lack of confidence and low self esteem.

Can brahmacharya reverse this? The thought that all these years were wasted really pains me sharply. Low self esteem, low confidence is always bringing suicidal tendency. Can brahmacharya really help?

Thanks.

Varman

Answer

Confidence, physical and mental strength, cheer, positivism, powerful concentration, exemplary memory and all other notable qualities which help man perform well in life come from the Atman (soul).

Tapping the power of the Atman is possible through Brahmacharya and Brahmacharya alone. There is no other method. Lack of Brahmacharya leads to erosion of these qualities. This is the absolute truth.

The man who is into a life of Abrahmacharya (incontinence) is on the opposite shore and moving farther away from his Atman (true self) with every passing day. He constantly needs some sense stimulation or the other, or life becomes unhappy and boring. Hence he overeats, drinks alcohol, takes recourse to recreational sex, develops other vices and becomes a slave to these. If he does not have vices, he has to spend money on buying something or the other. He has to pamper himself with some external object or the other. But all external objects, sensations and thrills have limitations, for they are all false in terms of the absolute reality. They are all ‘Maya’ (illusion) and not real. They cannot give lasting happiness to the degenerated Jiva (embodied soul). So he has to indulge in more and more of these to keep him happy. In the process, he loses his physical, mental health and incurs much bondage through karma. His mind becomes a slave to these sensations. They neither give him happiness, nor release him from their grip. It is a very dangerous trap. It is very, very difficult to get free of this trap.

An Urdhvareta Brahmachari on the other hand is full of bliss and self-contentment. You can feel the radiance and power of such a Brahmachari. He has a calm, pleasant, joyous face and demeanor. He maintains silence or speaks very little, yet communicates effectively. He is very sure of himself and his objectives. His aura is surcharged with ‘Ojas’ (divine astral energy). Ojas helps one accomplish difficult tasks with much ease. The power of Ojas can help one cut through very trying situations with seamless effort. He evokes the feelings of respect and affability in people. His work with people gets done very easily further to the strong impression and charisma surrounding him. Words cannot describe the positivism and power of such a man.

A life of Brahmacharya perfected through a lifestyle of Yoga leads to inundation of such qualities on an ample footing. The established Brahmachari eventually reaches a state where he becomes content in the self by the self. He derives the greatest bliss from the Atman (his true self or God) and does not require anything external for entertainment. Such a Brahmachari is constantly smiling from inward, full of unexplainable happiness and contentment. For no reason, he is happy and full of joy. He does not require a reason or cause to be happy, for he is getting closer to the greatest source of unending ‘Ananda’ (bliss) – His Atman. The Atman himself is these things to the power of infinity and their personification. ‘Sat-Chit-Ananda’ (truth-existence-bliss) is the Atman.

This is one’s real and true state. Not the other (full of misery and sorrow).  We are the Atman and should hence return to our Atmic state. It is our birthright. It is the very purpose of the human birth. We should not let lower traits and emotions rob us of our birthright. We should not become slaves to these and suffer in pain. The purpose of the sexual act is procreation and not recreation. If it is extended to recreation, it will lead to sorrow. This is the truth.

Brahmacharya is the greatest ‘Pooja’ (worship) and ‘Tapas’ (austerity). There is no worship or ritual higher than Brahmacharya carried out with God devotion for self-realization, so say the scriptures. Such a Brahmachari need not go to any temple, mosque or church. He need not prostrate before any idol or photo of God. His body itself is the greatest and most holy temple. The Atman (soul or Lord) within is the greatest deity. He worships this Atman every day and minute through true Brahmacharya and the true self called Atman, who is none other than the Supreme Almighty gives him the greatest bliss.

||देहो देवालयः प्रोक्तः जीवो देव सनातनः|
त्यजेदज्ञ्यान निर्माल्यं सोऽहं भावेन पूजायेत् ||

“This ‘Deha’ (body) is a divine temple with the ‘Atman’ (soul) within as the presiding deity. Discarding the old flowers called ‘Agnyana’ (ignorance), I worship the great Atman within as no different from the Almighty” - So say the Upanishads.

Self esteem and confidence then appear within the twinkling of an eye. The Brahmachari does not have to try for these. They come unasked and without doubt through honest and sincere Brahmacharya. Practice a life of Yoga & Brahmacharya with honesty and devotion to God. Go through each and every past answer to get clear with the method. Within a year of such practice, there will be impressive improvements on all fronts and the grace of God will make life very meaningful.

ॐ तत् सत्
(That Supreme being is the absolute truth)
