Meaning of wrathful deities

Dhananjay • 1/27/2014
Question

Hello, in Hinduism and Tantric Buddhism, what is the real meaning of the wrathful deities and heroes which have blue and red skins?

Answer

The Supreme manifests itself in wrathful forms, to dissuade the Ego from furthering evil and to remind it of the pain and sorrow which follow wrong actions. In other words, these deities are the protectors of Dharma (righteousness), acting as guardrails against slippage of the aspirant into the wrong path. They can be worshiped to help overcome the Ego. A mental image of these deities can be used, to overcome and negate evil thoughts. They are the guardians of Dharma, working under the directions of the Lord.

ॐ तत् सत्
(That Supreme being is the absolute truth)
