Prolonging life

Question

Hello,

I know from reading your past answers to other users questions that you say prolonging life isnt really important to the Self. But after reading stories from the yoguic tradition, some yogis were able to live 200+ years in their physical body. For example some masters like Swami Vivekananda (died young) but others lived long like Babaji.

Is this because they practiced meditation for that specific purpose and when you cling to that thought of prolonging life it works and if not it doesnt? It cant be only brahmacharya, you have to practice some unknown technique, maybe pranayama or embryonic breathing, i dont know really.

Thank

Answer

Your efforts should be to realize the self. Do this much and all other things fall into place. The higher power that runs the show will automatically make the body and mind go through those actions required for well being to the extent of what is due in one's destiny.

1. One's life span is already fixed at birth, like all other things, by factors beyond one's control.

2. If a life of Yoga & Brahmacharya are followed with the Yogic methods prescribed, they become conducive to a healthy and long life. This is as much as one can do and needs to do from one's side. Nothing more is necessary.

Finally, that which HE wills alone transpires, try however hard you desist. Hence the wise do not waste their resources getting caught with the illusory fancy for a long life. Such a desire is  itself the greatest impediment to realize the self.
