Tending to worldly tasks

Question

QUESTION: Dear Dhananjay,
I am having a tough time remaining fixed onto the Self while tending to other tasks at work. I remain fixed on the self going in to work, and then before I know it, I've become so absorbed in the pressures and workload of daily life, that I've become completely engulfed in Maya and find myself struggling to get back to the Atman, remorseful for ever letting it go. I try to remain detached initially, but I don't know what happens. I don't know when, how and where I lose presence and consciousness.

In the Buddhist philosophy it is recommended that one complete each task with complete focus and attention ONLY on said task and nothing else and to prevent the mind from wondering elsewhere. Furthermore, one should develop a habit of living COMPLETELY in the present moment. The mind should not project itself into the illusions of past and future. It is said, that in doing so one develops mindfulness and concentration.

My question is; How does one remain fixed on the Atman while tending to tasks requiring the mind and body? Is the above-mentioned method correct and flawless? Is there a more efficient method?

I'm very sorry if you have already answered this question. Please tell me if you have, and I will go through past answers.

ANSWER: When work is carried out with involvement, honesty and sense of commitment, it becomes possible to invest one's heart and soul into it. All of one's energies flow towards efficient completion of the job on hand. One should do this as a part of one's 'Dharma' (duty), in the script written by God. Then there is neither attachment, nor deviation from the Atmic state, for it is a part of Dharma. The self is held on to by itself.

QUESTION: Should one make sure to use single-pointed focus on all tasks at hand or is this unnecessary?

Answer

Does a knife pierce a fruit when thrust at a single point or when touched at many points? which is correct ? Focus means concentration. It is always single pointed. That alone completes a job efficiently.
